There’s something about a classic piece that screams expensive and exclusive. The more limited and unique an item is, the higher its cost and resale value.
Despite the psychology behind purchasing expensive handbags seeming outrageous, most experts actually believe that your investment is worthwhile, with resale prices rising after several years.
Handbags are not just accessories anymore. Some women use them to flaunt their social status and wealth, and some even use them to protect their romantic relationships – flashing their pricey bags at women they feel threatened by.

1. Mouawad 1001 Nights Diamond Purse – USD 3.8 million
Guinness Books-record-holding Mouawad 1001 nights diamond purse remains unbeatable as the most expensive handbag in the world.
Sold for 3.8 million in Christie’s auction in Hong Kong.
The bag is made up of 18 karat gold featuring 105 yellow diamonds, 4,356 colorless diamonds, and 56 pink diamonds. It took 8,800 hours for artisans to create this exquisite masterpiece.
This is only 1 of 5 Guinness Book of World Records that the Emirati luxury goods company holds.
2. Hermes Kelly Rose Gold – USD 2 million
This bracelet-like bag was designed by Hermes in collaboration with jeweler and shoe designer, Pierre Hardy. It was crafted to resemble crocodile leather and is made up of solid rose gold dotted with a total of 1,160 diamonds.
It took two years to finish and only 12 pieces were ever created. Although the bag is too small to fit even your phone, it can be carried conventionally or worn as a bangle with the handles around your wrist.
3. Hermes Birkin Bag by Gin Tanaka – USD 1.4 million
This bag by Hermes and Gin Tanaka, a Japanese designer, was made using platinum and carries 2,000 diamonds on its outer shell. What’s unique and awesome about it is that you can detach its diamond sling and wear it as a necklace or bracelet.
The pear-shaped 8-karat stone as a centerpiece can also be worn as a brooch.
4. Hermes Chaine’d Ancre Bag – USD 1.4 million
The Hermes Chaine’d Ancre Bag has a complex, prison-like design due to its anchor-shaped chain links which are embedded with 1,160 pieces of diamonds. Not only is it expensive because of the materials, but it is also a Pierre Hardy collectible and only three were created.
5. Lana Mark’s Cleopatra Clutch – USD 400,000
The Cleopatra Clutch is a favorite among celebrities walking the red carpet. Generally, only a single Cleopatra bag is created every year and each bag looks different in design and color.
Currently, Chinese actress and singer Li Bingbing owns the most expensive Cleopatra Clutch encrusted with 1,600 white diamonds that amount to 40 karats, and pink diamonds and pink gold were used to write her name down. Lana Marks purposefully designed the bag to match the color of her gown.
6. Niloticus Crocodile Himalaya Birkin – USD 379,000
In order to lighten the hue of the materials, Himilaya bags are dyed for a very long time. The design portrays the images of the Himalayan mountains, with rich brown for mountains and whites for clouds and snow-capped tops.
